Aiguanatura is a company focused on sustainable tourism, preservation of natural heritage, and aquaculture installation. Located within the National Park of Els Ports, its main activity revolves around species repopulation. One of the attractions they aim to offer visitors is the opportunity to enjoy a comprehensive aquaponic experience. To achieve this, they have an isolated fish pond where they intend to set up a visitor-ready aquaponic system.
Prior to our visit, the company made unsuccessful attempts to implement a reusable aquaponic system using leftover materials from other projects. It did not work out as they had expected, so we decided to lend a hand and take on this challenge. We would make use of what they already had, with minimal investment.
After 7 days of on-site work, planning, and problem-solving, we successfully completed the project, leaving fully functional facilities along with an operational manual. We also committed to providing ongoing support until the system could sustain itself.
What We Did ?
We repurposed the fiberglass tanks, which were previously used as fish tanks, for the aquaponic system. We drilled inlet and outlet connections, installed siphons, and valves. The NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) channels were redesigned, and we adjusted the angles of operation. Using blocks and cement, we constructed a floating raft structure (DWC - Deep Water Culture) that would settle into four interconnected sumps located in the lowest area. Additionally, we installed six media beds (biofilters) with their respective siphons, valves, and piping.
