I was captivated by the possibilities of integrating aquaponics into a terrace, recognising its harmonious relationship with other technologies. Intrigued, I embarked on a feasibility study to assess the viability of implementing urban aquaponics within this terrace system. Driven by curiosity, I dedicated more than 10 m2 of my terrace to aquaponic cultivation, and I am thrilled to share the outcomes with you.

The primary objective was to attain a consistent supply of fresh vegetables to meet the demands of our daily family cooking recipes. Simultaneously, we aimed to cultivate high-quality fish, free from hormones or antibiotics.  By integrating aquaponics into our terrace system, we sought to create a self-sustaining ecosystem that provides us with a direct source of both vegetables and fish, ensuring their freshness and quality while minimising our dependence on external food suppliers.

I am immensely content with the results, and my family is equally impressed. Engaging in cultivation within the aquaponics system proved to be an enjoyable and enlightening experience for all of us, particularly the children. It not only fostered a sense of perseverance, patience, and appreciation for nature but also offered valuable educational opportunities. However, as time passed, we decided to refrain from giving names to the fish.

What We Did ?

Our initial step involved scouring for a mini-greenhouse that would seamlessly align with the surface and design requirements of our project. To elevate the structure, we ingeniously utilized plywood. Throughout the entire process, we were determined to incorporate recycled materials, giving them a renewed purpose. Exploring ways to repurpose discarded items led us to unveil a world of possibilities in terms of materials, integration techniques, and assembly methods. This approach not only enhanced sustainability but also encouraged creativity and resourcefulness in our endeavor.
